About This Game

Ninety-nine floors down, something is waiting

Orbs of the Overlord is a roguelite for the ZX Spectrum 128K — a real one, in Z80, that loads from tape in about half a minute and runs on the hardware you have in the cupboard.

Ninety-nine floors. Fifteen bosses. Every floor generated fresh, every death final, and a shop that spends what your corpse was carrying so the next hero starts a little less hopeless.

It is a demake, and the original is coming to Steam

The PC version of Orbs of the Overlord is in development at 7 Towers Soft Games. This is the whole of that game taken apart and rebuilt inside 128 kilobytes: the same classes, the same bosses, the same rift, the same fifteen tells you learn to read — with the polygons replaced by attribute cells and the mouse replaced by W A S D.

Nothing was cut to make it fit. Some of it was made better to make it fit.

Three ways down

  • WARRIOR — hits hardest, sees furthest, and learns rages: four bought abilities, including Head On, a charge down the line you are facing that puts your skull through the first thing in the way and leaves it reeling for two turns.
  • BATTLEMAGE — middling at everything, and the only spells that reach.
  • PRIEST — frail and half-blind, but grows fastest and picks locks.

The rift

Somewhere around the middle, the floors stop being a dungeon. The walls change, the monsters change, your own class changes name — the Warrior comes out the other side a Commando — and half the things down there shoot at you instead of swinging.

Walk into one of those and the game becomes something else entirely: a three-lane corridor running away to a vanishing point, a magazine of six, a reload, and a monster at the far end that commits to one lane and lights it red a heartbeat before it fires. Being somewhere else is the whole of the answer.

What is in it

  • 99 floors, generated fresh every run, with fog, locked doors, hidden rooms and sealed vaults
  • 15 bosses, each with its own silhouette and its own tells — read them and you live
  • 5 orbs: Warp, Boost, Ghost, Rage, Death
  • 33 achievements, kept between runs
  • A shop that opens on your death and spends 40% of what you were carrying
  • Save and load — instantly to a spare 128K bank, or slowly to tape
  • AY music and effects, on the channels the sound effects do not use
  • English and Greek — the whole interface, switched with G on the title screen
